Today at Apple offers free sessions that inspire hands-on creativity in photography, art, music, and more. During my internship at Apple, the creative team was working to release updates to the existing experience.
Launched in late 2018, the release included sessions in three new and expanded formats — Skills, Walks and Labs — which offer hands-on group sessions focused on photography, video, music, coding, app development, art and design and more. The new sessions were free at every Apple Store worldwide and allowed visitors to find the right session for their interests and skill level in order to unlock their creativity, inspire learning and encourage connection.


As an intern on the team, my contributions were focused and specific: I owned the L and XL breakpoint adaptations and supported visual refinement across the homepage and card system.
Breakpoint design across L and XL: Designing for Mac meant working across a wide range of viewport sizes where small decisions compound quickly. My work focused on how the session card system behaved at larger breakpoints — how cards reflowed within the grid, how spacing and margins adapted to wider layouts without the content feeling adrift, how typography scaled to maintain hierarchy at larger sizes, and how hero imagery filled larger canvases without losing compositional integrity.
This wasn't just spec translation. At L and XL, the grid has more room to breathe, which means hierarchy decisions that hold at small sizes can quietly fall apart at larger ones. I worked through those edge cases and delivered annotated specs for the breakpoints I owned.
Visual contributions
I also contributed to visual refinement on the homepage composition and card design — adjusting hierarchy, spacing, and layout details in collaboration with the senior design team as the feature moved toward production.
Collaboration
Working on a feature at this scale meant operating inside a large, cross-functional team. I collaborated closely with art directors and senior designers on visual decisions, worked alongside design system managers to ensure breakpoint specs aligned with the broader system, and partnered with engineers and PMs during handoff to make sure implementation details were accurate and feasible. For an intern, that kind of exposure — getting to work directly across disciplines, not just observing — shaped how I think about design as an inherently collaborative practice.
Reflection
Sessions was an early look at how a consumer product operates at Apple's scale — tight feedback loops, high craft standards, and real attention to how design decisions land across a broad device ecosystem. Contributing at the breakpoint level gave me a concrete understanding of how responsive systems are actually built and handed off, and working inside an existing design language taught me how to extend a system rather than impose on it.
